KEEP IT SIMPLE: THE ESSENCE OF PHOTOJOURNALISM
Masterclass by Jan Grarup
24 – 26 May 2013 | Riga, Latvia
Organised as part of the Arts Programme "Tête-à-tête 20 Episodes" with the support of The Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation and the Danish Cultural Institute in Riga.
“Photojournalism is not about the amount of cameras you carry, neither is it about appearance – photojournalism is about empathy and having a story on your mind which needs to be told.
During the workshop I will explain how to reduce “the noise” in your head – narrow your story down and make you ready to go out with energy and a clear mind to cover the stories you want. How do you research your story, get in contact with the right people and get close to human beings you have never seen before. Trust is a key issue, and at the end of the day it is all related.”

During the masterclass, Jan will present his work and explain his work process, from research to publication. The projects of the participants will be reviewed and they will receive advice on completing their projects or work in progress.
For whom?
Participation in the masterclass is based on a competition of submitted project work and motivation letters. The students must bring their photojournalistic or documentary project or projects, either completed or work in progress. There are no limitations regarding the background and age of participants.
The language of instruction is English.

About Jan Grarup
Born in Denmark in 1968, Jan Grarup has been reporting for more than two decades on conflict around the world, including the Gulf War, the Rwandan genocide, the siege of Sarajevo, and the Palestinian uprising against Israel in 2000. Grarup’s work takes the viewer to the limits of human despair, dignity, suffering and hope, and reflects his belief in photojournalism’s role as a witness, a historical record, and an instrument of change and of its necessity in telling the stories of people who are powerless to tell their own.
Grarup has been honored with some of the photography industry’s and human rights organization’s most prestigious awards, including two nominations for the W. Eugene Smith memorial fund for humanistic photography, eight World Press Photo awards, special mention for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, two UNICEF children’s awards, five times Photographer of the Year Award in Denmark, and many more. His coverage of the conflict between Palestine and Israel resulted in two series: The Boys of Ramallah, which earned a POYi World Understanding Award in 2002, followed by The Boys from Hebron. Recent photographs include those of the earthquake in Haiti taken for Time and Dagbladet Information. In November 2011, Grarup joined The New York Times as a staff photographer, covering Africa and the Middle East, especially Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and the Horn of Africa. In late 2011, he photographed the refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, and during 2012 traveled extensively in Somalia, producing in-depth reportage on several issues faced by the Somali population. His work regularly appears in major magazines such as Newsweek, The Guardian, Sunday Times Magazine, Stern, GEO, Paris Match, L’Express, la Repubblica and others worldwide. Grarup has published two books - Shadowland (2006), which won PDN’s Photography Annual 2007 for best photography books and Darfur: A Silent Genocide (2009). He has twice been a master at the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass.
Participation fee and Teterev Foundation subsidies
The participation fee is 100 LVL, of which 70 Ls is kindly subsidized by The Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation for each of the selected participants. The remaining 30 LVL shall be transferred to the ISSP account as a confirmation of participation.
Applications
To apply, send an APPLICATION FORM describing your background as a photographer and motivation for participation, and attaching 10-12 images from your project work.
The application deadline is 10 May 2013. The application process is completed.
Selected participants will be informed by 12 May.
