Flâneur Riga residency
2 international artists
April - May 2016
Inspired by the idea of flâneurism - seemingly aimless wanderings around the city - the residency is designed for photography artists interested in developing work in and around urban space. The influential 20th century philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote that for a flâneur “the walls are the desk against which he presses his notebooks; news-stands are his libraries and the terraces are the balconies from which he looks down on his household after his work is done”. The residency is intended for photographers with an original perspective on present day city-dwelling.
We received close to 200 applications for the residency open call; the two artists selected were Alex F. Webb (UK) and Jonas Feige (DE). See the results of the residency here: www.issp.lv/en/news/flaneur-riga-residency
The public presentation of the Flâneur Residency in Riga took place on 25 May as part of the official Riga Photomonth 2016 programme. The event was organised in cooperation with the creative collective of poets and artists Orbita.
The Flâneur Residency in Riga was organised by ISSP in the framework of the Flâneur: New urban narratives project.
