Vai iespējams iedomāties redzi kā decentralizētu, kolektīvu un juteklisku žestu? Ja nu redze nebūtu saistīta ar specializētiem orgāniem, piemēram, acīm, bet būtu iekļauta ķermeniskā "pasaulē būšanā"? Ja nu redze nebūtu mūsu galvenā zināšanu uztveres forma? Kā būtu, ja fotogrāfija kā redzes rīks nebūtu reprezentatīva? Somu mākslinieces Maijas Anniki Savolainenas izstādes “Solarofīti” nosaukums veidots no jēdzieniem “solar-” (saules-) un “-fīti” (norāde uz augu vai specifisku biotopu), un tā pievēršas fotogrāfiskiem procesiem, kas neietilpst cilvēkam redzamajā elektromagnētisko viļņu diapazonā.

What if we imagine vision as a decentralized, collective, sensuous gesture? What if it was not acquired through specialized optical organs such as eyes, but embedded in the bodily being-in-the-world? What if seeing was not the ultimate form of perception? What if photography as a tool of vision was not representational? The name of Finnish artist Maija Annikki Savolainen’s exhibition “Solarophytes” is derived from the terms “solar”- (relating to or determined by the sun) and “-phytes” (a reference to a plant or plant-like organism), and focuses on photographic processes that are not within the visible range of electromagnetic radiation.

Izmantojot īpašu tehnoloģiju, māksliniece panāk ultravioletā starojuma reprezentāciju fotogrāfiskā attēlā. Cilvēka āda iegūst dīvaini tumšu krāsu, īpaši vietās, uz kurām tiek lietots pretapdeguma līdzeklis. Līdzās fotogrāfijām, māksliniece izmanto skulptūru, skaņu, īpaši izstādei veidotus robotus un dabas materiālus, kas visi ir savstarpēji saistīti. Gaismas pāreja no vienas formas uz otru ir fotogrāfijas esence – starojums atstāj pēdas uz gaismjutīga, taustāma materiāla, piemēram, fotofilmas, bet tas līdzvērtīgi iedarbojas arī uz augiem, kas absorbē gaismu, izmantojot to kā enerģijas avotu.

Izstāde tapusi sadarbībā ar mūziķi Arturi Tairu, mediju mākslinieku Otso Sorvetulu un bioloģi Titu Kotilainenu.

Maija Anniki Savolainena (Maija Annikki Savolainen) ir māksliniece, kas savos darbos izmanto fotogrāfiju, video un instalāciju. Ieguvusi maģistra grādu fotogrāfijā Ālto Universitātē. Iepriekš studējusi bioloģiju, kas ietekmējis arī viņas mākslinieces praksi – tā apvieno mākslu ar dabaszinātni. Savos darbos pievēršas informācijas plūsmai fotogrāfiskā materiālā – kas notiek procesā, kurā nemateriāla informācija kā gaisma tiek pārtulkota taustāmā materiālā kā fotogrāfiskā attēlā, augu biomasā vai skulpturālās instalācijās. Bieži sadarbojas ar dažādu nozaru zinātniekiem un māksliniekiem. Izstāde veidota īpaši ISSP Galerijai ISSP Rīgas rezidences ietvaros.

Using specific technology, the artist achieves the representation of ultraviolet radiation in a photographic image. Human skin acquires a strange tone, especially where sunscreen has been present. Alongside photographs, the artist makes use of sculpture, sound, especially designed robots and natural materials, all of which are interconnected. The transition of light from one form to another is the essence of photography - radiation leaves traces on photosensitive, tangible material, such as photographic film or a digital sensor, but it also affects plants that absorb light, using it as an energy source.

The exhibition was created in collaboration with musician Artturi Taira, media artist Otso Sorvettula and biologist Titta Kotilainen.

Maija Annikki Savolainen is a visual artist working with photography, video and installation. She gained her Master of Arts in Photography from Aalto University in 2014. With a background in studying biology, her work tends to combine natural science and art in a distinctive way. Her works examine the information flow in the material transition of photography – the process through which information contained in an intangible form as light, is translated into tangible materials such as photographic images, plant biomass or sculptural installations. She often works in collaboration with scientists and artists from various fields. The exhibition has been created especially for ISSP Gallery as part of the ISSP Riga Residency.
