1:07:2010 Update - ISSP 2010 and Arles

Mesdames et Messieurs! Here you will find the updated ISSP 2010 programme, list of participants (confirmed), and information for participants.

From 5th till ~11 July a considerable part of ISSP team will be in sunny Arles in France, for the Rencontres d’Arles festival! Any photography education establishments who wish to think about joint cooperation projects, or simply to get to know ISSP and enjoy our company and a glass of french vine together are welcome to contact us. 15:06:2010 Nordic-Baltic photography education exchange project

Already a bit old news, but great nevertheless - the Nordic-Baltic Culture Mobility Programme has supported our project application and we are starting to implement a short-term networking project called “Nordic-Baltic Photography Education Exchange”. From now on, closer links with the Union of Photography Artists in Estonia, Fine Arts department (Photography) of Estonian Arts Academy in Tallinn, and Fine Arts Department (Photography) of Turku Arts Academy in Finland will be build. The aim of the project is to increase the quality of photography education through synergies and information exchange among the partner institutions. You will also have a chance to meet our project partners’ representatives at ISSP in August!

31:05:2010 ISSP application results coming soon

Dear all, we have completed the selection process and are getting ready to announce the results. The list of ISSP selected participants will be announced to applicants by email and on this site today - tomorrow.

11:05:2010 2010 applications completed

Dear all, the ISSP Application period is now closed. We have received 182 applications from a total of 41 countries. The runners-up after Latvia (54) are Germany (15), Italy/Russia (11), UK (10), and Finland/Turkey (7). The furthest ones are Canada/US, South Africa, and Hong Kong. We seem to have gone global this year. This is truly exciting, thank you all!

We are looking forward for evaluating the applications! The results of participants’ selection will be known by the end of the month - everyone who applied will hear from us. Have a great month of May! :)

6:05:2010 ISSP 2010 Applications - 5 days to go

Just a reminder: the deadline for the ISSP 2010 Applications is 10 May 2010 as announced and will not be prolonged. We will be accepting applications till 24:00 Monday, 10th of May. Any applications arriving later will only be considered for the Waiting list, if at all.

Ps. We are already very excited about the amazing collection of applications that have already arrived (by now from 28 countries, 4 continents)! We wish you all good luck and are looking forward for the selection process!

27:04:2010 Aaron Shuman in Riga (second try)

We all try again and are looking forward to host Aaron Shuman in Riga this weekend, provided no more volcano surprises coming up. The lecture Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs will take place at kim? at 19:00 on Saturday 1 May 2010.

The workshop AESTETICS OF NOSTALGIA will run this weekend, 1-2 May. You are welcome to apply for several vacant places till this Friday, 30 April!

14:04:2010 ISSP Applications open (but for Safaris)

Hey hey! We are pleased to announce that the applications for the International Summer School of Photography 2010 are officially open. The deadline for applications is 10 May 2010. We will accept 60 students in total this year.
One small note! - our newly introduced on-line Application form still refuses to make friends with Safari browser, so problems with uploading photos there. Thus you will be on safer side if you use any other browser than Safari if you want to apply immediately. We are working on this problem, so hopefully everything works everywhere soon!
And of course, we are looking forward to seeing your applications!

9:04:2010 Aaron Shuman in Riga: workshop and lecture

In framework of US culture month in Riga “Made in USA“, we are pleased to invite applications to an ISSP-run workshop AESTHETICS OF NOSTALGIA by a great photographer, editor, writer and curator Aaron Shuman. The workshop shall take place on 17-18 April 2010, at kim? Riga.

The two days course combines lectures, critique, and individual photographing by participants to explore in depth the subject of NOSTALGIA. See complete workshop description here, and apply till 15 April!

NB! a public lecture “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” will take place at kim? at 19:00 on 15 April 2010. All photography lovers are invited.

We are glad to announce that the applications for the double master-class by Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou in Riga are officially open! The workshop will take place on 27-28 March 2010 and is organized in cooperation with kim?

To apply, send a short description of your photographers’ background and motivation for participation (max 1500 characters) and indicating a preferred master-class (Vanessa Winship or George Georgiou) to office@issp.lv. Also please include a website or a couple of images from the photographic project/s you would like to discuss during the class. Applications deadline is 16 March 2010. We will generally accept applications and allocate seats in the master-classes on ‘first-come-first-serve’ basis.

18:02:2010 ISSP 2010 in the cooking

Hey  hey! Just in case anybody doubts it - ISSP 2010 will take place this year, disregarding all the crises!!! And it will be greater than ever, with fantastic teachers, and of course, fantastic students!:) The dates are 31 July - 8 August 2010, in Ezersala, Ludza. We are actively working on the preparations and fundraising - lets keep our fingers crossed for our yet-unconfirmed supporters and sponsors, as we hope to keep the fees down as usual…

We plan to announce the applications by the beginning of April 2010! btw, we have received two applications already - using the 2009 form. these are considered too late… upps… too early ;-))

We are happy to announce that the ISSP 2009 results are about to be presented in Riga - the ISSP 2009 Exhibition opens on 3 December 2009, 18:30 at Goethe-Institute Riga! All the participants, family and friends of the International Summer School of Photography are invited!

The exhibition will feature selected final works of 25 young photographers (5 from each workshop, selected by the ISSP teachers) as well as the entire collection of the ISSP 2009 final projects in the slide-show format and the ISSP 2009 Catalogue, to be released at the Opening.

Photoworks presentation: sequence, context & strategies or How To Get Your Work Out in Public

2 days | 4-5 December 2009 | 10:00 – 18:00

The workshop addresses the prerequisites for the content and design of an image series, or sequence, which shall be brought together to come up with best possible form of presentation - projection, exhibition, book, or other - for the respective body of work. Beyond the technical requirements, the most decisive criteria for a successful presentation of photographs is the choice of the subject matter/topic and the corresponding structure of the images - sequencing - as well as the selection and design of the materials for the final set up.

The date and time of the ISSP 2009 Vernissage in Riga is 3 December 2009, 18:30, at Goethe Institute !

The exhibition will feature a selection of most vivid works (5 per workshop), to be selected by ISSP teachers. We also very much hope to present the ISSP 2010 Catalogue!

3:09:2009 ISSP Club evenings to start from September

We have launched a new activity - a series of ISSP club meetings in Riga! The club evenings will take place with an approximate regularity of every second week. In the programme: ISSP participants’ presentation of completed or ongoing projects, invited artists’ talks, and a special selection of photography-related movies. The main motivation is to keep up the contacts and networking among the ISSP participants.
All ISSP friends are welcome! Information on upcoming events - in your mailboxes, or at ISSP Facebook group.

11:08:2009 ISSP 2009 is over : the ISSP Exhibition in Ludza

The ISSP 2009 is sadly over … But, the ISSP Exhibition will remain open to the public in Ludza for a good duration of over a month - till 27 September 2009.

52 photographers from 13 countries display the results of their creative searches in Ludza and its surroundings during the week of International Summer School of Photography (1-8 August 2009). 

Location in Ludza: kinoteatris ‘Latgale’, Skolas iela 26, open during the cinema screenings (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings) or by prior arrangement. Welcome!

The Exhibition will open at Goethe Institute in Riga on 3 December 2009. We also hope to see the 2009 ISSP Catalogue coming to life.

1:06:2009 ISSP 2009 participants selected!

The ISSP Selection committee has completed its work evaluating 2009 applications. It was a hard task to select the best 50 (52!) out of 108 - and we did receive more quality applications than we could accept…

Congratulations to the chosen ones! ;) We are looking forward to hearing your participation confirmations soon. And, yes, over ten applicants are currently in the waiting list, in case any places free up.

We also want to thank everyone who applied this year - we really appreciate the interest and hope you try again next year. All of the applicants will very soon receive emails informing of the status.

Hey hey! The admission of applications for ISSP 2009 has been completed yesterday - we have received over 100 applications, from over 20 (!) countries. Thanks to all of you for your interest!

The selected participants shall be announced on this site in the beginning of June. We will also inform all the applicants by email.

Good news - the teacher for workshop nr.5 of ISSP 2009 is finally confirmed! Vanessa Winship (UK) will be giving a workshop on Environmental portrait. Vanessa is a double winner of World Press Photo Competition (1998 and 2008) and a Photographer of the Year 2008 of SONY World Photography Awards. issp2009_poster_rgb_7_a4Hey hey! We are glad to announce that the application process for the 4th International Summer School of Photography (ISSP) is now open. ISSP 2009 will take place in Ludza, Latvia from 1 to 9 August 2009.

ISSP 2009 will traditionally offer 5 thematic workshops, led by distingushed photographers and teachers. 50 participants will be selected based on their application forms. Participation is open to students from Latvia and other countries.

The applications will be accepted until 3 May 2009, and the results of selection process notified during second half of May. See information on the workshops and how to apply at this very website! (Btw, now newly refurbished, on much more reasonable CMS and with Comments option on the news!:)).

Now for sure, the ISSP 2009 shall take place on 1-9 August 2009 at the same location in Ludza.

Information on this year’s workshops and teachers, and the application forms shall appear on the updated web-site very soon - on 1st week of April. The deadline for participants applications will be 1st week of May.

The Exhibition will remain open to public at Goethe Institute Riga, Torna iela 1, from 6.10. till 1.11.2008, Mondays – Fridays 9:00-20:00, Saturdays 9:00-15:30

10:07:2008 The ISSP 2007 Catalogue has been released!

The ISSP 2007 Catalogue is a collection of 15 photo-series created by the ISSP students for the final exhibition in August 2007. An independent jury: art historian and curator Inese Baranovska, photographer Alnis Stakle and painter Andris Eglitis was engaged in the production of the catalogue by selecting three brightest photo-series from each of the 5 thematic workshops. The publication is a documentary of the creative results of the ISSP. It also provides a summary insight into artistic explorations of new authors, at the same time reflecting the current tendencies in young contemporary photography.

Rīgā, Andrejsalā, biedrības Orbīta telpās “Elektrocehs”, 12.jūlijā 18:00 tiks atklāta izstāde Fotogrāfa dienasgrāmata. Tajā tiks eksponēti jauno fotogrāfu, Starptautiskās fotogrāfijas vasaras skolas 2006 absolventu īpaši izstādei radītas foto - dienasgrāmatas.

Izstādē piedalās jaunie fotogrāfi Krista Burāne, Mikus Kļaviņs, Uldis Daugaviņs, Sabīne Mežkaze, Viesturs Pinka, Viktorija Krone, Asnate Bočkis, Edgars Širokovs. Read more »
